Egypt's presidential race is underway with the first candidates registering to run for the country's top job. Hundreds are expected to apply ahead of a June election that will see a transfer of power from the interim military authority to Egypt’s first ever freely elected president.
Tens of Egyptians went to the Supreme elections committee to fill in application forms to become candidates for Egypt’s first post Mubarak Presidential elections. Any Egyptian at least 40 years old, who has never held a foreign citizenship, could apply.
However there other requirements, if candidates do not belong to a political party, they must get support signatures from 30 thousand Egyptians or 30 Parliament memebers.
Presidential applicant Hossam Shams El Din said: "I don’t understand why people apply, but then complain they can’t get 30,000 signatures. If they can’t get the signatures, they can’t be serious, and they must look for other alternatives."
Some are applying, believing in themselves, while others are just applying to guarantee the transparency and fairness of the elections process.
Presidential applicant Nahaat Mohamed said: "We are looking to create a balance among the presidential candidates. But the truth is only a few candidates are gaining the attention, although there are others who have much stronger reform plans. But I’m sure the people will listen and choose the best person. "
Presidential applicant Milad Karras said: "I’m applying because I have the right to apply. As a Christian Egyptian, I want show the world that a Christian can feel safe living among Muslims and love his country. I know that my chances of winning are almost zero, but I have a dream and I want to live it. "
But the concept that anyone could apply to the presidential race was also seen as an insult to the country
Lawyer Mohsin Ismail said: “So far, 202 people have applied to stand in the presidential race. This is an insult to the country and to the Egyptian public. Citizens deserve better. A president should be someone with experience and charisma, Egypt is better than that.”
The dead line to complete the application forms and requirements is April 8th, And by May 11th Egyptian abroad will begin to vote, followed by domestic voting by the end of May. While the name of Egypt’s New president is scheduled to be announced before June 30th.
